Moebius Strip (1999) Joe illustrated his roots in 16mm film and optical printing before an eventual move into digital formats and timelapse. He even described how, early in his career, he qualified as a Welsh filmmaker, despite not being from Wales. Whilst working predominantly as an artist-filmmaker of his own work and lecturer in Animation at the Royal College of Art, he has also produced commercial work through Slinky, including concert-projections for U2. The timescales of his film shoots productions vary: setting the track for Sea Change took eight hours, the same time it took to film many of the individual timelapse shots in his and Rosie’s later film Strange Lights, which was filmed over the course of a year. He also screened some of Rosie’s drawn animations, for which he had designed the soundtracks. He concluded with a recent commission, a concert projection for the band Tindersticks, who were clearly impressed with his and Rosie’s earlier film Parkwood Avenue, a study of near-identical houses in an suburban street. He is also a tutor on the Animation Programme at the Royal College of Art. Joe has been a guest lecturer at a number of international colleges, Before concentrating on his own moving image practice Joe was a director for Slinky pictures, directing commercial work including advertising, music videos as well as producing visuals for live performances for bands such as U2. Joe’s personal films have won international awards including Jerwood Moving Image Award 2008, SXSW Film Festival (USA 06), among others. He is a founder member of folk-projects and often works in collaboration with co-founder and fellow artist Rosie Pedlow. Originally studying animation his work now spills over into multi-media works that operate in tandem with or as an adjunct to moving image, playing freely with and between the spaces of site, screen and gallery. Recent projects include visuals for Sting and Peter Gabriel’s live US tour and ‘The Waiting Room’ project in collaboration with The Tindersticks and Clermont Ferrand film festival.
